12 AWG THHN THWN-2 Stranded Copper Building Wire
THHN THWN-2 Copper Building Wire Allowable Ampacity in Duct: 30
Also Known As:
12 copper wire, 12 building cable, 12 hook up wire, 12 conduit wire, 12 nylon wire, 12 construction cable, 12 thermoplastic-insulated copper wire, 12 THHN-PVC tray cable.
Application:
THHN stands for thermoplastic high heat-resistant nylon. Known for versatility and durability, it is the most common type of building cable. The double marking THHN /THWN-2 indicates that the electricalwire is suitable for wet and dry conditions equally (The letter “W” means that it is water-safe). Additionally, the cable is resistant to corrosion, excessive dryness, and the impact of chemicals. The building wire is rated 90 degrees Celsius in both wet and dry locations. The electrical wire
is rated at 600 V.
Construction:
Conductor:
THHN THWN-2 conductors are constructed of annealed soft copper that follows ASTM B3 and ASTM B8 standards.
Insulation:
The cable is insulated with a thermoset plastic jacket (PVC) that is flame-retardant, sunlight-resistant, lead-free, strong, and stable. Without being too bulky, it ensures that the cable can be used in harsh conditions. The jacket is color-coded in accordance with ICEA Method 4.
Standards:
- ICEA S-73-532
- UL 1277 (Resistant to flame, moisture, and sunlight)
- UL 1581, UL 83, UL 1063 , UL 758
- A-A59544
- ASTM B3 and B8 conductor
- ANSI/NFPA 70 for Safe Electrical Design and Installation
- RoHS compliant
- Safe For Commercial and Industrial Use
- Color-coded #1-E2 per ICEA S-73-532
- May be used in NEC Class I and II systems
- May be used in Division 2 hazardous locations
- Allowed for Exposed Run (ER) and be used in accordance with NEC

Application:
- Type THHN or THWN-2* conductors are primarily used in conduit and cabletrays for services, feeders, and branch circuits in commercial or industrial applications as specified in the National Electrical Code2.
- When used as Type THHN, conductor is suitable for use in dry locations at temperatures not to exceed 90C.
- When used as Type THWN-2*, conductor is suitable for use in wet or dry locations at temperatures not to exceed 90C or not to exceed 75C when exposed to oil or coolant.
- When used as Type MTW, conductor is suitable for use in wet locations or when exposed to oil or coolant at temperatures not to exceed 60C or dry locations at temperatures not to exceed 90C (with ampacity limited to that for 75C conductor temperature per NFPA 79).
- Conductor temperatures not to exceed 105C in dry locations when rated AWM and used as appliance wiring material. Voltage for all applications is 600 volts.
Stranded:THHN or THWN-2* or MTW (also AWM) meets or exceeds all applicable ASTM specifications
- UL Standard 83
- UL Standard 1063 (MTW)
- Federal Specification
- A-A-59544, and requirements of the National Electrical Code.Other part ID is HW001 75001.
